What happened to the most votes winning?

During the summer, I wrote publicly several reasons why Donald Trump would never be President of the United States. My reasoning was based on the outcome of an expected election—you know, the kind of thing where the person who gets the most votes wins.

But here in those very United States of America, where, as Mark Twain said in “Life on the Mississippi,” even God has been made into a useful swindle, we have figured out other ways of dealing with such inconveniences.

Interstate handgun purchases: the truth

Both the editorial and article about handguns found at crime scenes in New York are mistaken about current federal law. It is a felony under 18USC922 section 922, “Unlawful Acts,” for any citizen to take possession of a handgun purchased outside their state of residence. The only legal way to purchase a handgun out of state is to have it shipped to a licensed dealer (FFL) in your state who must conduct a background check and insure compliance with all state regulations. It is also a felony for an individual who doesn’t hold an FFL to sell any handgun to a nonresident, so the gun show loophole is a myth.

We already have the federal laws needed to prevent these criminals from obtaining handguns out of state and bringing them to New York. What we don’t have is a justice department with the will to strictly enforce the law.

Reaffirming a core belief

In these days after the election, to those who are celebrating or mourning, our Quaker meeting would like to reaffirm our core belief: that God is within everyone.

We are a small Religious Society of Friends, who meet every Sunday at 11 a.m. in Sterling at Journey’s End Farm. We gather in silence to look for the light in ourselves, all other beings, and in creation itself. If you long for a similar search, we welcome your presence.

Our address is 364 Sterling Rd. (State Route 196), Newfoundland, PA. Our phone is 570/689-3911. We are affiliated with the North Branch Friends Meeting in Forty Fort and Philadelphia Yearly Meeting.

In Friendship,
