Cover crop incentive offered

October 5, 2016

HONESDALE, PA — The Wayne Conservation District will again offer an incentive program to promote the planting of cover crops on fields that would normally be bare after harvesting. Cover crops are excellent soil protectors and nutrient scavengers.

Only fields producing an annual crop (one that leaves the soil open) will qualify for cover crop seed reimbursement such as corn, soybean, or a commercial vegetable garden. The funding is available to active farmers only.

The seed must be planted with a No-Till Seeder. The farmer may use his own No-Till Seeder, or the district has one to rent. Cover crops must be planted early enough to ensure successful establishment.

Producers will be reimbursed for 75% of actual seed costs that are applied at the Penn State University recommended agronomic rate. Seed applied above or below the agronomic rate is not reimbursable. If you have any questions about recommended application rates, call the number below for more information.

You must be pre-registered in order to participate. To schedule an on-site registration, call 570/253-0930, or apply in person at 648 Park Street Complex.
