Heroin, crack, car and foot chase in Cherry Ridge Twp

Janine Edwards, Wayne County District Attorney, announced today that a pursuit between the Pennsylvania State Police, Honesdale Barracks, and three individuals in a 1999 Chrysler 300 ended with the arrest of three individuals.

On August 4, 2016 at 2243 hours PSP Trooper Oakes was traveling on PA 191 on regular patrol duty in Cherry Ridge Township, Wayne County. In front of the trooper was a 1999 Chrysler 300 with a replacement red fender. The vehicle matched the description of a vehicle involved in burglaries about the Hawley area and had no functioning registration plate light.

The trooper initiated his emergency lights and sirens in an attempt to stop the vehicle however the vehicle increased in speed and attempted to flee. The vehicle continued to flee at speeds of approximately 90 miles per hour.

The trooper attempted a maneuver to stop the fleeing vehicle at the intersection of the Owego Turnpike and Wanoka Road, which forced the vehicle partially off the roadway causing it to stop. Three people exited the vehicle and ran into a nearby wooded area.

Three PSP Troopers pursed on foot and James Sullivan, 32, of Waymart, Pennsylvania, was first to be apprehended. In the course of the apprehension, Sullivan kicked a PSP Trooper in the chest.

Members of PSP Patrol from Honesdale and Blooming Grove and PSP Aviation and Canine units were utilized and found another occupant of the car, Vanessa Ferrara, 24, of Scranton, Pennsylvania in a wooded area a short distance from the scene of the accident.

It was learned through the investigation that the third occupant was Matt Delea.

Sullivan was found to be in possession of a red camera case in his pants pocket containing 40 wax bags of heroin, approximately 10 grams of cocaine and prescription opiate pills.

Sullivan and Ferrara were transported back to PSP Honesdale as well as a backpack seized from inside the car. The backpack had a wallet containing Sullivan’s social security cards. Multiple wax packets containing suspected heroin residue were found inside the back pack as well as suspected “crack” cocaine, smoking pipes and burglar’s tools including a black facemask, black gloves and a black headlamp.

Also in the backpack was a Yamaha ATV key. In the vehicle was a digital gram scale and packaging material. In the investigation it was learned that Sullivan and Delea had been on their way to sell drugs that evening and that Sullivan and Delea had broken into a garage and stole a motorcycle and an ATV about two days before.
