PORT JERVIS, NY — Since 2013 the Port Jervis Tourism Board has sponsored Christkindlmarkt, which is promoted as a family event in the tradition of markets held in Germany during the holiday season.

Free Thanksgiving dinner

MILFORD, PA — A free community Thanksgiving dinner with all the trimmings will be held at the First Presbyterian Church on Broad and Ann Streets on November 24 for those who cannot be with their families or who are in need on Thanksgiving Day.

The meal is prepared at the church and is served at 12 noon on Thursday. The day starts at 9 a.m. for the volunteers who cook the food, when they pack up and deliver turkey dinners and lots of extras to many people in Meals on Wheels programs or to anyone who finds it difficult to come out.  Read more

Milanville Store collects for comfort bags

MILANVILLE, PA — The Milanville General Store will be accepting donations for Kate’s Wish for Wellness Chemotherapy Comfort Bags. The project was started in memory of Kate Frisch Carmody to help patients like Carmody, who was a non-smoker, kept herself in great physical shape and ate a healthy diet, but nevertheless contracted an aggressive form of lung cancer at age 42, and died a year later.  Read more

WAA opens holiday show

WURTSBORO, NY — The Wurtsboro Arts Alliance will hold its Holiday Art Show starting on Saturday, November 26 with a reception from 2 to 6 p.m., and Sunday, November 27 with a reception from 12 noon to 4 p.m. The show will feature the work of many local artists, with gift items of jewelry, pottery and ceramics, one-of-a-kind ornaments, knitted and crocheted items, small paintings, handcrafted holiday cards, and more.

The show will continue every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 12 noon to 4 p.m. until December 18. The gallery is located at 73 Sullivan St.

WJFF annual music sale

Cooperage concert features HHS alums

HONESDALE, PA — Honesdale High School (HHS) alumni Josh Craft and Adam Zielinski will play The Cooperage, 1030 Main St., along with members of the Josh’s Philadelphia-based band, Conversations, on Friday, November 25 at 7:30 p.m. The concert will also feature the local band Jung Bergo and a toy drive for Toys for Tots. Marines will visit The Cooperage to help collect new, unwrapped toys, books, games and puzzles for children in our community for Christmas.

Ornament making

HONESDALE, PA — Lisa Ohliger will lead the Wayne County Historical Society’s Christmas ornament decorating session for kids. It will be held from 12 noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 26 in the main museum at 810 Main St. Children will each decorate a Victorian-style cinnamon ornament or holiday card. Haas opens photography show

HONESDALE, PA — George Haas, an Eldred, NY resident, opens a show of his works with a meet-the-photographer reception on Sunday, November 27 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Re/Max Wayne, located at 416 Main St. Haas has pursued the art of photography for over 40 years, working with a variety of formats from 35mm film to high-resolution, digital pictures. His images are from all over the world. Haas is also the photographer for the Yulan Fire Department, assisting in scene documentation and investigations since 1969.  Read more

Contra dance

HONESDALE, PA — You can kick up your heels at The Cooperage, 1030 Main St., on Saturday, November 26, at a contra dance that runs from 7:30 to 10 p.m.

Contra dancing is a form of traditional American set dancing, similar to square dancing. You and your partner dance a series of figures, or steps, with each other and with another couple. The instructions given by the caller form a series of repeating figures that dancers eventually memorize.  Read more

Decorate a tree at the museum

HURLEYVILLE, NY — The Sullivan County Historical Society will present its popular Theme Tree Exhibit starting with an open house and reception on Sunday, December 4 from 2 to 4 p.m. There will be refreshments. Admission is free, but donations are appreciated.

Any group or individual is invited to decorate a tree at the Sullivan County Museum. The theme may be anything you wish, such as toys, birds, stars, flowers, or representative of your organization. For more information call 845/434-8044.

Santa Parade and tree lighting

HONESDALE, PA — Honesdale’s annual Santa Parade will take place on Friday, November 25 (rain date Saturday, November 26). Line-up will begin at 5 p.m. in the Top Notch parking area on Fourth Street and the parade will step off at 6 p.m. Activities in Central Park immediately after the parade will include the lighting of the Christmas Star on Irving Cliff, the lighting of the Christmas Tree in the park (shown here), holiday music and an opportunity for kids to visit with Santa.

D&H Canal talk

GRAHAMSVILLE, NY — Author Bill Merchant, president of the D&H Canal Historical Society will give a talk titled “D&H Canal and Sullivan County” on Sunday, November 20 at 2 p.m. at the Time and the Valleys Museum on State Route 55.

The Delaware and Hudson Canal stretched 108 miles from Honesdale, PA to Kingston, carrying coal, lumber, cement and local goods up and down the canal and to the Hudson River bound for New York City. Merchant will talk about the impact of the canal on Sullivan County.  Read more

Nat Osborn returns to Harmony

HAWLEY, PA — Dave Matthews Band opener and European touring artist Nat Osborn and guitarist Dustin Carlson, from the Nat Osborn Band, will return to Harmoney Presents on Saturday, Novemver 19 at 8 p.m.

Described as “irresistible” by Consequence of Sound, Nat Osborn “writes smart, punchy tunes that blend old-school Gershwin-era song craft with decidedly modern sensibilities.” Osborn has performed at Harmony Presents in several configurations, including his seven-piece band. An evening of song at The Cooperage

HONESDALE, PA — On Saturday, November 19 at 7:30 p.m., The Cooperage Project will present a recital with its board chair, Edward Cremo, on piano, and Lock Whitney, baritone. “An Evening of Art Song,” a program that spans the 19th and 20th centuries, will feature songs of Franz Schubert, Gabriel Fauré, Ralph Vaughan-Williams, Roger Quilter, Thomas Dunhill, Francis Poulenc and Benjamin Britten.
