Helping wildlife: upcoming opportunities

One of spring’s many delights is the arrival of wildlife babies. Their survival is sometimes put to the test, as happened to seven red fox kits found in a Walmart parking lot in Trexlertown, PA. Fortunately, they were rescued by the Pocono Wildlife Rehabilitation and Education Center (PWRC), which has cared for tens of thousands of injured and orphaned animals since its founding in 1983.  Read more

Milford Farmers Market opens

MILFORD, PA — Starting on May 24, and every Sunday until September 27, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the environmental non-profit Air Soil Water will host the Milford Farmers Market. This year it will be held at The Grotto, 508 Harford St. The new location provides excellent exposure on a heavily traveled U.S. Route 6, a principal route heading into town for locals and driving through town for vacationers and folks getting away for the weekend. The market will have about 20 local vendors from the tri-state area, live music and educational programs.  Read more

Hiking the Appalachian Trail

LIVINGSTON MANOR, NY — Joyce Garber of Bethel will present “The Appalachian Trail: An Adventure for All Ages,” on Saturday, May 23 at 5:30 p.m. at Morgan Outdoors, 46 Main St. An alternate title might be, “If you can’t do it all, do what you can!” Now in her 70s and not feeling capable of hiking the whole 2,189 miles, Garber could not get the idea of the Appalachian Trail out of her mind. So she chose a grand compromise. Over two years, bit by bit, she drove to trail crossings in each of the 14 states the trail passes through, from Georgia to Maine, and hiked as far as she could in a day.  Read more

On the road again

Traditionally, Memorial Day is the official kick-off of the “busy season” here in the Upper Delaware River region, but it seems to me that the onslaught of events, parades, concerts, art shows and the like begins earlier and earlier as folks anxious to open their windows share a desire to get a jump on the good times and make hay while the sun shines. Graduations abound as the proms get underway, and with slight trepidation, I open my email and scour the seemingly endless list of events to attend. Don’t get me wrong—I’m celebrating as well, but I loathe having to pick and choose.  Read more
